Charm Bracelets - Traditional and More Popular Than Ever!

Many people like to celebrate distinctive events, including birthdays, anniversaries or other significant events. Holidays such as Christmas and Hanukkah are marked with the giving of presents that hold significance for the giver and the recipient. One time-honored tradition is the gift of a charm bracelet – a means to mark highlights in a noticeable way all the time and to have the memories with you whenever you wear it.

Regardless of who gives the charm bracelet, the initial charm is usually a "Baby’s First Birthday" charm to mark the arrival of a long-awaited person, usually a daughter since these bracelets are usually worn by women. Other charms can be added over time to signify occasions that ought to be respected, from the first day of school and First Communion to Bat Mitzvah and Sweet Sixteen. Charms representing faraway locales are often added as commemorations of an amazing vacation. For example, one might include a charm depicting the Eiffel Tower as a memento of a holiday in France and a palm tree to summon up the Hawaiian Islands.

Another kind of charm bracelet is based on a sole subject like a hobby. Other charm beads are made of precious metal - sterling silver or gold set with gems or patterned metal like decorative sterling silver beads from Bali. The beads are chosen individually and new ones may be selected whenever an occasion presents itself. The order of the beads can be adjusted to fit the wearer's frame of mind or complement an outfit, since the beads can be configured in any order.

No matter what you decide to celebrate or when you begin to build it, a charm bracelet is a marvelous way to keep your sentiments right at the end of your arm where you can instantly recall a happy occasion, loved ones or anything else that is dear to your heart.

During the summer, it gets very hot in my office and I just didn't feel up to writing every day. I have been working, but sort of put the blog aside for a while ... these things tend to happen now and then. Of course eventually its time to get back to the old routine ... and so here it is - this is my first post in a couple of months!

I'm going to take this blog in a new direction. We'll have to see how it shakes out, but ... I'm planning on a series of articles about - no surprise here - handmade jewelry! Not anyone or any specific artist like in the past; although I may spotlight one or two here and there. More of a general series with articles that appeal to a wider audience. I've been writing articles for blog syndication, and some of them would work very well here; and of course I'll write exclusive content just for this blog as well. So here's to new things, a new direction and and a new season ...

Amethyst comes in a wide range of colors from pale violet to rich, dark purple. It has a long history, and was originally named by the ancient Greeks. This has always been a prized gem.

This gorgeous gemstone is fairly hard and durable, so it is well suited for rings and bracelets. Deep, well saturated purple stones can be quite valuable and are usually found in high end jewelry set with diamonds. This gem is commonly set in either silver or gold.

Amethyst jewelry comes in many styles ... from traditional to trendy!

Every day I write a review of four handmade jewelry pieces made by Etsy jewelry artisans. Etsy is home to MANY talented artists who create amazing things with their hands; everything from greeting cards to sculpture! I'm a metalsmith myself, and so I appreciate a great piece of jewelry when I see it. Of course this is all opinion ... but I do have a great eye for design!

I like to feature a variety ... so I'm showcasing a pair of earrings, a necklace, a bracelet and a ring. Turquoise has always been popular and today it is in demand more than ever.

This beautiful gemstone matches very well with silver but it also looks great with copper and gold! The rich blue and green colors of this gemstone go well with casual clothing but it can be a beautiful accent to a fabulous dress or an attractive suit.

The ring features an unusual blue AND green turquoise cabochon from Nevada. This artisan made a setting fitting of this big, bold and colorful turquoise cabochon with a hand cut fine silver bezel and a chunky band for the shank. The turquoise cab is accented with an attractive beaded border surrounding the bezel; this ring will fit a size 7.25 - 7.5 comfortably.

I Love Chalcedony!

I confess. I really DO love chalcedony! There are so many varieties ... in so many colors! From black to creamy white with every color in between, this stone is a popular choice for jewelry of all types - rings, pendants, earrings and more.

Chalcedony is a silica mineral, but it doesn't grow in large crystals the way quartz - another silica mineral - does. It has a cryptocrystalline structure - it is composed of crystals so tiny they can't be viewed with a conventional microscope.

Agates are chalcedony with natural bands of color in a repeating pattern. Black onyx is a commonly used chalcedony; so is carnelian. My favorite is chrysoprase - the bright green type; although the yellow variety is also nice! Any "agate" without repeating bands of color is actually chalcedony.

Precious ... Handmade Jewelry featuring Sapphire, Ruby, Emerald and Diamond

Today I'm featuring four pieces made with precious stones. These four gemstones are often thought of as the most valuable gems used in jewelry making; of course there are others like precious opal, tanzanite and demantoid garnet but the classic precious gems are sapphire, ruby, diamond and emerald.

I did try to find affordable examples; of course it is easy to find very expensive pieces containing these beautiful gemstones; just go to any mall and there are thousands of pieces in your average jewelry store featuring these gems. These four are all handmade one of a kind artisan jewelry pieces currently available on Etsy!

Sapphire is a multicolored gemstone also known as corundum; basically the stone is an aluminum oxide. The color of the gem depends on the chemical impurities it contains; deep blue sapphires have trace amounts of iron and titanium and are the most valued sapphire color. Red sapphires are always called rubies; fancy sapphires can be pink, green, yellow, purple, a bright orange color called Padparadscha - sapphires can even be black!

The wire wrapped sapphire briolette earrings shown on the right were lovingly handcrafted with sterling silver wire by Angelene, an Etsy based jewelry artist living and creating beautiful jewelry in Australia.

These earrings are a nice size ... just over 2" top to bottom, and the wire wrapped sterling silver forms are just over an inch wide.

This red-hot necklace features a combination of red pearls and ruby rondelles, accented with sterling silver beads and clasp. As I mentioned above, ruby is also a corundum, but is never called sapphire. The red color is due to chromium; ruby is an exceptionally rare stone, especially good gem quality ruby.

Her Ruby Rose Necklace was made with top drilled cranberry colored freshwater pearls and bright red 5mm faceted ruby rondelles; the length is a versatile 18", but can be adjusted at your request. This necklace is a fantastic deal at just $95.00!

When people think of the color green ... one of the things they always mention is emerald! This beautiful green gem is available in many shades of green and various qualities from gem grade to ... well, almost gravel. Emerald belongs to a family of gems called beryl, and has several popular "cousins"; aquamarine, a bluish green variety; heliodor, a greenish to bright golden yellow gem; bixbite, a bright red variety; Goshenite, a clear, colorless stone; and Morganite, a pink beryl. Green beryl is always called emerald.

Clear, transparent emeralds are among the most rare and valuable gems. But strong green colored, included stones are fairly affordable. This Emerald and Silver Coil Necklace was made with individually wire wrapped faceted emerald stones by the very talented wire jewellery artisan at Shazzabeth Creations!

The necklace features 13 faceted emerald stone beads; five are wired to the coil in front as a focal component. The necklace is a 20" length; the price is $320.00.

Last for today is this simply beautiful olivine diamond ring handcrafted by the amazing metalsmith behind the scenes at DreamsandJewelry, an Etsy shop featuring a nice variety of handmade silver and gold jewelry; some pieces are made with diamonds, and this ring is a nice example!

A lightly hammer-textured band of sterling silver is topped with a 14k white gold tapered bezel setting; the bezel holds a .5ct natural olivine color 5mm round diamond. This is a pretty ring; the uncomplicated design is the perfect setting for the sparkling olive green gem. The style puts emphasis on the stone, where it should be! This olivine diamond ring could be your favorite for a very reasonable price. Only $175.00!

Diamonds are carbon crystals; natural fancy colors are caused in two ways: heat and radiation from naturally occuring sources near the deposit, and by other minerals "contaminating" the pure carbon crystal. Clear, colorless diamonds are highly prized; but there are many other diamond colors ranging from a pale yellow to black. Many famous diamonds are actually colored stones; one of the most well known is the Hope diamond, which is a deep, rich blue!

The East Coast of the United States is enduring a heat wave. Yesterday in NYC it was 103ºF. Today isn't much cooler, and it started me thinking ... what a great theme for my next blog post!

So ... Today I'm featuring four sun drenched examples of handmade jewelry! These four artisans are doing something artists have done since the beginning ... the Sun is depicted in ancient art all the way back to cave drawings.

Call it a mini vacation ... its just too HOT!

Hi! I took the holiday weekend off, kind of. Of course I can't completely get any time off because things happen ... like the guy who called me at 9:40 PM on Saturday to ask about a chain ... I laughed and said this isn't exactly during business hours ... and he said ...

"Isn't this Jewelry ... 24-7?"

I repled ... "Yes. That means YOU can shop for jewelry any time of day or night. It doesn't mean I will be here working 24-7 ... I gotta sleep sometime!" ...

Of course ... he laughed, and I answered his question!

Saturday afternoon I shopped for commercially made silver earrings from my fabulous Thai silver jewelry supplier ... and I expect to see the package by next Monday. Once it arrives I'll have plenty of work to do, and the silver earrings section of the site will grow tremendously.

Yesterday I did a lot of updating in the silver rings category.

And ... I have a LOT of new handmade silver jewelry to list. I think I'm going to put some of it on the site, though ... it just makes sense. Etsy is a nice showcase for my handmade jewelry, but ... I also get lots of traffic on my site, with customers looking for handmade jewelry. Its time to use the site for that also ...

Just too hot in my office ... no AC. Its nearly 100 degrees in NYC ... so this is the blog post for today. I want to do the showcase, but ... I need to cool off. So ...

Contrasting metals are layered together in a stack called a "billet" and carefully heated; this fuses the layers together without melting the metals. The billet is then twisted, re-formed and cut across - revealing unique patterns in the metal.

This morning, I was searching for handcrafted jewelry items to feature in my daily post and saw this amazing pair of fused glass cufflinks by Mandy Treptow. Of course I decided right away they would be included in this post. I work at home, and rarely dress in a shirt and tie; but if I did I would want these cufflinks ... they're just $20.00!

These were made with a layer of opaque black glass is fused over a clear base, with red lines forming crosses in the center as a focal point. The backs are silver plated spring bar cufflink backs.

These four designs all have a lot of planning, thought and work behind them. They definitely are NOT traditional jewelry pieces, and that is what makes them beautiful ... they are all unique pieces handmade by artisans, not in a factory!

Jewelry is an ornament - worn by a person. Taste in jewelry design is a personal thing ... we all have different likes, dislikes and favorites. But great design transcends personal taste ... I feel these four handmade jewelry pieces do just that!

Glass has been used in jewelry making for thousands of years. Artisans learned long ago how to mold and manipulate glass into beautiful objects that are useful, long lasting and beautiful. Today there are huge factories making beads and cabochons from glass for use in jewelry making ... and there are also artisans who work in glass - making single beads

and glass cabochons one at a time, the traditional way. RadicalGlass is an Australian glass artist that is carrying this time honored art into the present with her red hot fused glass pendant designs!

Daily Jewelry Showcase!

I've decided that it is time for a new focus on my blog ... and I'm excited about it! Each day I'll showcase four jewelry pieces chosen from my fellow Jet Team member shops, and I'm also going to include a piece or two from handcrafted jewelry I find in an Etsy search! Here's the first in this new series ...

I love handmade jewelry! I've enjoyed making jewelry since I was 14 and made my first piece in Metal Shop class ... a copper tie clip for my Dad.

I'm 54 now ... and I still get excited every time I make a new piece. This of course leads to an appreciation of jewelry as an art form, and so ... I love OTHER artist's handcrafted jewelry designs, too! This is why I enjoy writing jewelry reviews every day ... and why I'm beginning this series.

On the left are the four pieces I've chosen to spotlight in this article. These pieces are all currently for sale on Etsy. They are all fabulous in their own way, and I liked them so much I thought they all deserved to be shown and featured here!

First is the beautiful Hearts of Romaine - brass collage necklace made by Jean of 3squares. This artisan jewelry piece was made with a collage print in brilliant color; the print is sandwiched between a brass plate on the back and a layer of mica over the front of the print.

The top frame is brass with a hand applied heat patina. The eyelets are tube rivets that don't just look great ... they hold the assembly together. The pendant hangs from a brass chain with a lobster clasp.

This artisan has been making her gorgeous handcrafted jewelry for more than 17 years. Although a trained artist, her experience as a jewelry designer began as a hobby - as it does for many of us. Of course once the bug bites, its hard to stop - and that's how her business began!

I chose four items to share from her shop. These pretty styles are a good representation of her creative work ... I think you'll like them as much as I do!

What a fantastic blue color! This artisan's Selena Earrings - Aqua Briolettes and Hammered Sterling Wire are a nice simple design with a load of style!

The aqua color briolettes are glass. They're suspended from hand forged spiral S links, with dyed quartz accent beads at the top. These dangles are easy and comfortable to wear with the sterling silver French hook style ear wires. First I want to show you this turquoise pendant! I love turquoise,
and some of the material coming from China is outstanding, especially
from the Hubei region. The two freeform turquoise stones in this pendant are a great blue color with interesting matrix patterns.

The design is a simple one, putting emphasis on the stones - where it should be. Separated by a beaded silver rondelle, the two stones compliment each other nicely.

Turquoise is a great gemstone to wear in the summer. It looks fabulous with a summer tan, and goes well with most brightly colored leisure clothing. It comes ready to wear with an adjustable cord; buy it today for $40.00!

These Black and White and Slinky Earrings are made with dyed bone. Bone is an ancient jewelry making material, probably one of the first; bone has become very popular since ivory trading was banned and import restrictions were made very tight. Bone is similar in that it can be carved easily; this gives it great design possibilities.

These earrings are incredibly lightweight. The stars at the top are carved through the dyed black surface to expose the white bone underneath for a striking effect. The large bead on the bottom is also dyed black bone; this bead is intricately carved. The white beads are common opal; and there are black onyx rondelles in this pair as well. All metal parts in these earrings are sterling silver; you could be wearing them for $30.00!

These are really different; I chose them for just that reason! These Red Jade Earrings with Lapis and Sterling Silver are certainly a lot more than the name implies.

I love the cloisonne end caps; I think they make these earrings special. The jade is an interesting shade; it matches the red in the cloisonne nicely, and the small lapis beads are an appropriate accent to the blue enamel. There are also a couple of sterling silver beaded edge rondelles in this design. These aren't small earrings; they're 2.75" top to bottom with the hook style ear wires. Only $44.00!

Last piece today is a bracelet. This bracelet features green freshwater pearls and Baltic amber, with an antique Chinese brass coin used as the focal component.

Finished with a gold plated magnetic clasp for ease of wear, this colorful bracelet makes a beautiful summery statement!

Handmade Polymer Clay Jewelry by Emily Claire Creations

Today I'm featuring EmilyClaireCreations, a shop run by a polymer clay artist who likes to make beautiful, very interesting handmade jewelry from this versatile material!

This artisan makes gorgeous bracelets, pretty pendants, fantastic necklaces and fashionable earrings. She has a real eye for design, and likes natural, classic, vintage and industrial forms and shapes, which influence her creations.

Many of these pieces look very heavy, but they're surprisingly lightweight. This artisan has mastered techniques for applying metallic and antique finishes to these pieces; what looks like solid metal may not be metal at all!

The Ancient Artifacts, Bronze Chandelier Earrings are a great example. They look like solid metal but ... they're polymer clay with a metallic finish. The texture and finish on the dangles is wonderful; I love the patterned diamond shaped ear wires.

There is plenty of movement in these earrings, and even though they hang 2 1/4" from the ear and look heavy, they're actually very lightweight. The jump rings are copper; and they have pure copper leverback earwires for comfort and security. You could be wearing these - for $12.95!

Your Love is a fabulous necklace with sort of an industrial look. The eyelets are a cool design touch; the cut-out heart is really cute and contrasts with the polymer clay metallic "bronze" hammer finished plate. The red copper finished overlay plate proclaims your LOVE!

This pendant hangs on a hand made copper link chain with wire wrapped red aventurine, Czech glass and art glass beads. It is finished with a copper lobster clasp. This fabulous necklace could be on its way to you for $35.95!

These beautifully patterned Metallic Blue Paisley Earrings were handmade by Emily Claire. They feature a deep, bold paisley design. The disc shapes are about the size of a nickle (21.2mm).

Shazzabeth Creations - Chainmaille Jewelry & Wire Jewellery

Today I'm writing about my fellow Jet artisan, the owner and curator of Shazzabeth Creations. This jewelry artisan creates the bulk of her jewelry with wire; mostly silver, but you'll also find a few copper, brass and gold filled pieces thrown in for variety. Lately she's been working in PMC!

Many of these beautiful jewelry pieces contain gemstones but you'll also find many necklaces, earrings, pendants, Bracelets and Bangles are all metal in design. The quality of the workmanship is superb; and she only uses top quality materials to create her handcrafted jewellery.

There are four basic types of jewelry in this shop; chainmaille, wirework, bead, and PMC jewelry.

The chainmaille necklaces are just gorgeous. Of course many people prefer bracelets, and if you do you'll love the chainmaille bracelets! There are some really nice chainmaille earrings here too.

This silver wire bracelet is a gorgeous example of this outstanding wire artisan's work. There are no solder points in the Cloudy Day Bangle ; it is created entirely with wire that was formed with hand tools, the traditional way.

A little about my JET Teammate DesignsbyCher!

This week I'm writing about my fellow JET Team member shop DesignsbyCher. Her handmade jewelry is simply amazing. Most of it is hand forged, made with only basic hand tools - mostly a hammer! Cher is an old style artist working and living in Texas. She's got a great sense of humor and a true talent and love for making jewelry.

Yeah ... its been a while. But now I have a reason to blog here every week! I began doing a promotional blitz ith my JET friends over at Etsy, and so now I'm going to spotlight a fellow JET member once a week. So this will become an active place. I kinda lost it after we gave up the street fairs, but now I feel its time to get active. So here goes ...

Its time to make the rounds here again, and so here it is! I've been keeping busy with the JETs over at Etsy lately, doing blog posts and tweets to promote my fellow team members. I'm much better with the JET blog; I post every day there and love doing it! And I've really done a lot to optimize my Etsy handmade jewelry store, hoping to get higher up in Google searches. I finally got the GoogleBase thing right; the last two weeks in a row I've had the maximum number of items uploaded. So ... pretty good so far!

I've got lots of design ideas ... gotta write 'em down or I'll forget - there is just so much to do! But I'm getting past each hurdle - one at a time!

I've also been doing some things to improve the website ... more social network links, cleaned out the onsite shopping directory so there aren't any dead links, and re-wrote the anchor text of some existing incoming links so they're more relevant to the content on the pages they connect to. Maintaining a site like ours is hard work, and I need to spend a few more hours a week on that also.

I know I need to do some stuff here too, and I've been neglecting it as usual. I get so wrapped up in my daily stuff to do that time just flies by, as they say! So here it is ... November already and I have lots to do as usual.

Our ETSY shop was Jet of the Day one day last week. Kinda weird to write about your own shop, but ... I love doing the post every day, so ... I treated us like any other JOD, and wrote a nice post about Jewelry24Seven on Etsy. Now I need to pay more attention HERE as well, so ... I'm gonna try!

I decided a month or two ago that I would try to make smaller, lighter pieces of jewelry. Silver is kind of expensive right now, and so I'm making open back pendants and ring settings. I'm trying to make pieces that I can offer for less; people simply don't have as much to spend as they used to. Nice things don't have to be big:

So much to do ...

Our silver jewelry order arrived from Bali, Indonesia ... so now I have NEW Bali silver cuff bracelets and hoop earrings to put up on the site. Today is photo day ... and if I can, I'll get the stuff up there today. Terry's home this week and she'll help me so maybe it'll go faster than usual. Yesterday we went to Manhattan to meet our JET friend Barbara from CapitalCityCrafts and had a really nice visit! Just made a chain ... and I have to ship it, so ... until next time!

So it isn't food. Work, as usual! Going full steam with the social networking and writing a post a day for the Jet Team Blog spotlighting the Jet of the Day. I've been going through the website using Google Webmaster Tools and fixing any problems I can. and I ordered a bunch of new silver jewelry - Bali silver cuff bracelets and Bali silver hoop earrings. They're coming from the distributor I deal with there so the jewelry will take about a week to arrive.

With the economy in the tank I figured I would have problems doing business, but it has been a very busy summer season! I've had lots of custom orders. The last two were for rings, and the styles couldn't have been more different!

This one features Chinese characters that say "Red Thread" ... there is an old proverb that says people who love each other are connected by an invisible red thread ... it went to a couple who are adopting an orphan from China ...

The second is made with wire, and the person who ordered it wanted it made to cover her entire finger. The entire ring is hand forged ...

I love this time of year ... usually. In NYC the weather has been rainy, but not too hot ... kind of strange. On rare days when it doesn't rain though ... its been perfect. The rain makes the weeds grow ... well, like weeds. Hard to deal with!

So I have been very busy this past month. I now use six social networking services on a regular basis. And I've been networking with the JETs on Etsy, exchanging links and promoting through the JET blog. I know that eventually all of this will pay off ...

In the course of my day I get a lot of email, and a fair amount of people want to know what sterling silver actually is. Today, sterling silver is the most common type of silver and the kind most people are familiar with.

Sterling silver is an alloy, which means it is a mixture of two or more metals. The primary reason silver is mixed with another metal is to harden it. Most sterling silver is a mixture of silver and copper. The proportion of metals by weight in the alloy determines the fineness or purity of the silver, as well as the name of the alloy. There are three commonly found silver metals found in the United States:

Pure silver is also called Fine silver. This is 999/1000 or 999 parts per 1000 pure. This is considered pure; the remaining .001 consists of (usually) traces of other metals. Fine silver jewelry is usually marked or stamped .999FS.

Pure silver is a soft metal. Unless it is very thick it can easily be bent by hand, and is easily scratched. Items made of fine silver need to be made with thicker sheet and wire to give them strength. By using sterling instead, thinner parts can be used because sterling is much more rigid when hardened than fine silver.

Sterling silver is always marked .925, which shows the amount of silver in the object. The same formula is used; this alloy is 925 parts per thousand silver and 75 parts per thousand other metal, usually copper. This can also be expressed as 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metal (copper) by weight.

The third commonly found type of silver in the U.S. is Coin Silver. Until 1964, United States coins 10¢ and larger were made of a silver alloy containing 90% silver and 10% copper by weight. A higher percentage of copper was used to make the silver harder and more durable so the high relief and details of the coins wouldn't wear away in circulation. Many of these coins are still held by collectors, and there are silversmiths who make coin jewelry out of them.

Silver jewelry is usually made with sterling silver because it is durable. Jewelry made with fine silver does have one advantage over sterling; it doesn't tarnish easily due to the absence of copper. Sterling silver tarnishes because the copper in it reacts with sulphur dioxide in our air. Sulphur dioxide is a common chemical compound found in everyday air pollution. It can come from natural sources like volcanic eruptions, and also man made sources like vehicle emissions and factories.

Sterling silver is a fabulous metal for jewelry making because it retains many of the properties that make fine silver attractive while gaining the benefit of increased durability. With minimal care - a cleaning and polishing when needed - sterling silver jewelry can last for many generations.

Happy July ...

So here we are in July, and the weather in NY isn't much like summer yet ... but at least we have a bit of sun now. June was so wet ... it rained something like 20 days last month. I've been doing lots of garden work - actually, battling weeds in the backyard ... and all that rain made them grow so fast I could hardly keep up with it. One good thing ... my habanero pepper plants are SO green ... and they are getting lots of flowers so I know I'm gonna be making lots of hot sauce this year ...!

Yeah, I know ... I'm supposed to write about the jewelry thing here ...

So I've stepped up the activity on Twitter and I'm getting a Facebook page set up. The JETs have been really great and are excellent promoters, so I'm not alone ... we've done a lot in a short time with social bookmarks on Del.icio.us and blog linking. The next target ... Stumbleupon. Eventually we're going to be a lot more visible ... working together helps a lot.

AND ... the entire contents of the Etsy shop is searchable - all of our handmade silver jewelry is now on Google Products! I set up an RSS feed upload to Google Base so it uploads automatically once a week. Nice tool ... Thanks, Etsy!

Summertime is here. We're not going to do any outside markets. Tired of paying rent and wasting the day. So ... more time to work on the web business. I have been a lot more involved with the JETs over at Etsy lately, promoting through social media. And of course I am trying to improve our search engine rankings and have done fairly well with that. And I have lots of design ideas for new pieces ... now that I have some time, I'm going to get settled at the bench and make some jewelry.

Added a nice 6mm wide bismark chain to our selection recently ... this is a nice size for a bracelet or a short necklace. It is a very attractive and strong chain.

Why Charm Bracelets are Much More than Ordinary Jewelry

To many people jewelry is part of their wardrobe. Everyone has their favorite pieces. Sometimes a ring or necklace can have a special, personal meaning because it was a gift.

These items are usually designed to be worn as-is. Charm bracelets are very different.

Over time, charm bracelets grow. They can become collections unto themselves. And they take on the personal nature of the owner. Many have charms depicting an endless variety of themes. People build sea themed bracelets with shells, sailboats and anchors. Or animal jewelry, with tiny giraffes, lions and bears connected to the chain links. We've seen career theme bracelets, and even one with a heart collection.

Charms are available in many types. One of the more popular categories is sports including golf, tennis, baseball, soccer, football, basketball, hockey, equestrian and more. Music is another, with musical instruments, notes and clefs. The holiday theme is popular with different bracelets for Halloween, St. Patrick's Day and Christmas. Even food is represented, with pizza, candy bars, hamburgers and veggies. The variety is simply amazing!

Although almost any chain with large open style links can be used as a charm bracelet, the traditional, classic charm bracelet is made with a double curb link chain. These links are made so they nestle into each other, giving the chain a wide appearance while using fairly narrow gauge wire to form the links. The double link adds strength and style.

A charm is connected to the link with a jump ring. Many people leave the rings open; but a valuable charm can be lost this way. A good jeweler will solder the jump ring closed when a charm is added to a link for a customer.

Gold is expensive, and so sterling silver has become the traditional metal of choice for this type of jewelry. Of course price is the primary reason why silver is more popular, but there are other reasons to consider. There are many more available in sterling silver. Gold charms are made in popular styles, but unusual designs are very difficult if not impossible to find. And of course people do mix silver and gold, which can result in a very attractive, unusual and valuable piece of jewelry.

An alternative is to buy a ready made charm bracelet. The average bracelet comes with five to seven charms attached to it. As described above, they usually follow a theme or central idea. By starting with a small collection of five or so, it looks very attractive while providing room for more to be added as they are acquired.

The ultimate collector heads to auction sites, garage sales and flea markets to hunt for vintage and antique pieces. A small silver heart from the 1920's can cost $50.00 - or even more, depending on rarity. Once in a while an entire vintage bracelet will appear in an Ebay estate auction and cause an online frenzy. Vintage examples have gone for many hundreds of dollars to avid collectors.

Why Sterling Silver Rope Chain is a Must Have Style

Jewelry fashions change often. Trendy styles come and go, as with any other fashion accessory. Some designs lend themselves to a certain style dress or can be seasonal. Obviously toe rings and belly rings are mostly seen during the summer months.

Then there are the classic styles every jewelry owner should have. This is the kind of jewelry that can be worn with just about any style clothing, all year round.

One of the most popular and versatile jewelry items is the rope chain. A long necklace is ideal for most lockets; a shorter length can be very attractive with a gemstone or birthstone pendant. Wide sizes make nice bracelets. Many jewelers use it as a component in other pieces. For example, this design is also fabulous used in a nameplate or anklet.

This jewelry can be made with any metal, but a sterling silver rope chain is a popular choice for a variety of reasons. An attractive, fabulous fashion accent that can be worn over a lifetime, they give high value for a very low cost.

This type of jewelry is made with round, ring shaped links. There are different styles; the design varies depending on the way it is made. Traditional double rope necklaces and bracelets are made by passing each link through the two previous links. Adding links in this manner allows the maker to produce jewelry that shows the spiral structure of this pattern. Standard sizes are made on machines that automate the process, but larger sizes are still made by hand, making and adding one link at a time.

Most commercially made pieces have soldered links. Larger commercially made necklaces and bracelets may be made with thick wire links that are not soldered.

Chainmaille artisans usually handcraft jewelry without soldering the links. These pieces are made in a way that does not require the links to be permanently closed; they will not come apart. Leaving the links unsoldered makes it easier to add onto or shorten bracelets, anklets or other items when making custom length jewelry.

A less expensive look-alike style is actually hollow. This design is made with fine metal tube shaped links. The result is a very light piece that looks similar; but isn't the same as solid jewelry made with wire links. The hollow links cannot be soldered closed; they break easily and often as a result. Many 14k gold bracelets and necklaces are made this way to limit their weight and keep the cost low.

Sterling silver rope chain is available in many size widths, from very fine to designs thicker than a man's thumb. This style is very strong; even fairly thin pieces are very tough because of the way this design is made. This means it is a great choice for holding your favorite pendant; but they also look great worn alone.

Sterling jewelry can be made with smooth or twisted wire links. Different textured links can be arranged to form patterns in the jewelry, like stripes. Other metals can be mixed in to create striking effects; jewelry made with copper and silver links is very attractive.

we're into the second week of November already. New York is getting cold, and I wish it was June. I am not a cold weather person. But it is what it is and I'll have to deal with it.

OK, I'm not a music critic, but I am a fan ... 4:13 Dream by The Cure is AWESOME. I cannot recommend it more highly. This is a really good new album. Buy it. You'll be happy you did.

So ... the site is doing well. I just set up a new shopping cart. This one is more secure and has more features, and it was very confusing for me to set up - good thing I have some experience with this stuff, so it only took a few days to get everything working properly. The cart is actually easier to use, and allows me to offer more options, so ... I added Google Checkout as a payment option. It must be more popular than I thought, because I've had a few shoppers use it already.

I sold a 20 inch long 9.1mm cable chain this weekend; been a while since someone ordered one of those. That is a big and heavy cable. I have a lot of new jewelry to take pictures of and put up ...

This week I made ten rings, and actually put most of them into the Etsy store. Seems like things are getting a bit better ... shipped packages every day this week. And this week the site is in the top ten for "handmade silver jewelry" - so now it ranks well for both the handcrafted and handmade keyword search terms. It's nice to reach a tough goal ...

So today I have a chain to ship ... and then I'm gonna see if I can get creative again! I have so much stuff to work with ... I buy all these parts and materials and then don't have time to put stuff together. Just have to make time, that's all ...

Spent a few hours yesterday submitting the site to directories. I have people pestering me to do link exchanges - especially now with the site at the top. I do WANT to exchange links but it has to be the right way, and they all want to do a triangular or 3 way link ... cause it fools the search engines into thinking you've got one way incoming links. But sooner or later the bots figure it out when they start going in a loop ... and the SE devalues the site as a result. So even though they charge a fee to "evaluate" your site directory links are the best kind ...

I am going to do my best to keep the site where it is. Not gonna be easy ...

Yeah, I know. I've been neglecting the ole blog. Sure, I AM busy, but I could write about it ...

So we're not doing street fairs this year. Learned THAT lesson. Kinda stinks being inside working on the PC all day. Every day. Lately, even on weekends ... but we're getting stuff done.

Learned some lessons the hard way. The blog advertising I was paying for was actually costing us more than money. I saw a couple of webmaster blogs that mentioned the name of the ad service I was using in a very bad way ... apparently Google was punishing sites that sold - and bought - ads through them. My site was perfect, but I couldn't get to the top of the Google search results. So I thought "maybe this is why" ... and ended the advertising after almost two years. And ... two months later ...

The site is now in the top ten results for the search term "handcrafted silver jewelry" on Google. Not only is this saving us $220.00 a month in advertising fees ... but we're getting more sales!

Today I did a Google Base feed for my chains. Next I'm gonna do the jewelry in our Etsy store ...

I really should have blogged about the two times we went to see the Cure in NYC ... WOW!

Precious Metals are in Demand -- Why Jewelry Prices have Increased Dramatically

Our world is growing every day. Not the planet, of course -- but technology has made it possible for people living just about anywhere to live better, healthier more comfortable lives. Growing markets and manufacturing centers have raised the standard of living worldwide. Of course it hasn’t helped everyone, but it is great to see people in China, India and many other countries becoming more prosperous.

People buy much more than necessities like food items and basic clothing when they can afford to do so. Everyone likes nice things. Luxury items -- high end cars, designer clothing, travel and jewelry have become status symbols in these up and coming places just as they have been for many years in the United States and much of Europe.

Increased demand for precious metal has risen along with this economic growth. There are many uses for these materials other than jewelry making. Gold is the best conductor of electricity; it is used extensively in the electronics industry. Silver is unsurpassed as a conductor of heat and is one of the best reflectors known. It is in great demand for manufacturing many of the things we use every day.

Precious metals are a limited resource. They truly are rare and the increased worldwide demand drives prices higher. It is a classic example of the supply and demand principle.

Three years ago silver was less than $5.00 an ounce. As I write this, the ounce price is close to $18.00. The price of gold has increased over $600.00 per ounce in the same time period; today the ounce price is about $930.00.

Jewelers don’t have it easy these days. The raw material they use costs much more, and it is becoming hard to carry stock – the investment is in many cases prohibitive.

Many jewelers are using copper in their designs. Copper has also seen dramatic price increases, but is still very affordable. Combining copper with sterling takes advantage of their contrasting colors, which can be very attractive.

Leather, ribbon and rubber cords are being used in place of chain to hold pendants.

Many newer styles are lighter, made with thinner stock. Pierced designs and filigree are making a comeback. These techniques produce large size pieces with lower weight.

Beaded styles are more popular than ever. Many of them use very little precious metal -- gold and silver beads are hollow, so they give jewelry a “big” look with little weight.

Of course, people will always wear jewelry. Gold and silver will always be the materials of choice. Higher prices prompt creativity; innovative design can help keep pendants and earrings affordable by using these limited resources sparingly. Less can be beautiful.

So ... We're into April ...

I have been doing the basic stuff that I never seem to have time for lately. My BIG project was my site's link directory. That took me over two weeks of dedicated work. It went from over 800 links to about 335. I had to visit every url, and most were either 404 pages, placeholders for domain resellers or sites that simply don't link back - many without any links at all. I expect the search engine spiders will be very happy with this housecleaning ...

I do try to make jewelry ... it is good for me to get away from the computer for a while. The extremely talented glass artist Tara C. of Combustion Glassworks made some fabulous dichroic cabochons for me, and I've had lots of fun making pieces with them - see our Etsy Mini above.

I miss going out to sell. I would LOVE to do a few craft fairs. No more street fairs, though. And we have done the flea market thing to death. It is just NOT worth the time. Or expense.

I have been considering selling through retail boutiques. I don't sell through any at present but may approach a few. I have lots of opportunities here in NYC ... there are small upscale shops in every borough.

I can't believe its MARCH! I have been working very hard on the Etsy business and the website. This takes time, and I know that. It has its ups and downs, but I have seen a general improvement in the website's visibility. And of course we are always making new jewelry.

I am SO happy its February! To me, it means the winter is on its way out ... and that brings lots of activity and new opportunities. The Super Bowl is over, baseball is on the way and everything turns green soon. We're planning on doing some craft fairs this year instead of the street fair circuit, and our focus on handcrafted jewelry has given us a great basis to build on.

I have so many things going on "the stove" right now I don't have time to think. But I know it'll all work out well ... I have increased our web presence quite a bit and we're in a good place now. If the economy doesn't tank we'll do just fine.

I am very happy we joined the JET Team on Etsy. I firmly believe working with them will help us sell more there, AND also think that I can contribute a lot to the group. We are going to contribute a prize for the St. Patricks Day Treasure Hunt, and will be participating - so watch for an announcement here - I'll post the details when they become available!

We decided to join the Etsy JET team. This is a group of jewelry sellers on Etsy that have joined to help each other promote their shops. I have always felt there is a real benefit to having a membership in a union, trade association etc, and this in a way is very similar. I look forward to contributing what I can - ten years online has taught me quite a few things about marketing, SEO and customer service. I am also sure I can learn a lot from team members - there are new things I don't know about and the team members there are happy to share. I think its going to work out very well. So ... the holiday season is over, and its time to get serious about work again. We are planning what looks to be an active year; and forming a plan that will transform our business completely - from selling commercial silver jewelry to almost all handcrafted silver jewelry.

The emphasis is now on our own designs. We have been making new jewelry, and will be branching out into other jewelry forms. Many of the commercial items we have now will be used to make new handcrafted items - as component parts. Our kiln will be used more often. The one notable exception - we will continue to sell Bali silver jewelry as its handmade nature compliments our new direction. And of course silver chain will play a big part in what we do.

I have been optimizing the site for new keyword terms and have done well. The site has recently been added to several major directories and I have been adding relevant, highly ranked link partner sites. I expect we'll see an improvement soon. I do check, but don't want to get specific. I will say the site now ranks at #2 on the first page at Live.com (MSN search) for my target keyword. Not bad, but .. if that happens on Google I will do a REAL happy dance ...

Next on the list is our Etsy shop. I have new jewelry to list ... I have to take pictures of it. I added our Etsy shop to the listings at craftfaironline.com and at entireweb.com so the links will be picked up by search engines. I have also been looking at several Etsy "street teams" - groups of Etsy sellers who join to promote their shops.

MainStreetMallOnline is another venue I need to pay attention to. That also is a place we sell our handmade jewelry, and it needs some work. I have room to put a lot more stuff in the store ... I just need to make time for it, and will.

We are DETERMINED to find a good place to sell outside (offline). Artists and Fleas is good ... but not busy enough with customers looking for what we have on a steady basis. Our jewelry runs to the expensive side, and most people need an occasion to buy it. We are looking into a less expensive line for places like A&F. We want steady offline work ... not just at Holiday time.

The blog. I love it. But I am SOooooo busy ... Doesn't matter. I am GOING to post more often.

Artists and Fleas in Brooklyn on Saturday December 8

So ... I've been very busy this week. Had lots of chains to put together and get out ... the site is coming along well. I spent some time optimizing the index page for a new target phrase, and can see results already - I watch our search engine positioning very carefully.

I also dropped the affiliate relationship we had with Plum Island Silver. I just wasn't happy with the arrangement. Our shoppers trust us to offer them only the best quality jewelry; I like to see the merchandise personally before I offer it for sale, and you can't do that with a catalog company. And to be honest, the stuff is everywhere ... they have thousands of affiliates. I am taking the site back to its original focus - handcrafted silver jewelry. I want it to be DIFFERENT - not the same as every other silver jewelry site.

We're looking forward to another Saturday at Artists and Fleas on December 8. The crowds are getting pretty serious - lots of foot traffic. We really like it there. We'll have to see what happens ... we'll probably want some time off in February but for now ...

It gets pretty cold in there. It's a concrete and cinderblock warehouse. The door is open all day. There are two propane heaters ... but they don't really do the job. We have a secret to warmth ... we use those foot and hand warmers that hunters like so much. I have never been a fan of winter ... I can't wait for spring already. BRRR!!!!! But the people are great ... and SO talented. I have a guy bringing me a custom made Robert Smith mousepad ... WOW! For those who don't know who RS is ... his band the Cure has been my favorite since 1980 ... This guy makes the best psychedelic pop art I've seen recently. I may have to collect and frame his mousepads ...

The Friday Rant ...

Just got back from dropping off packages at the UPS depot. The place was really busy ... I had to park a block away, and its in a very industrial area - nothing but warehouses. The line was out the door ... but virtually everyone there is picking up stuff, and I was the only one dropping off packages. I get everything ready before I go - I print pre-paid UPS labels so all I have to do is drop 'em off. The thing is, the people waiting to pick stiff up don't want to let me get past them ... they think I'm trying to "cut the line". They get incredibly nasty ... UPS policy says I can just walk to the front of the line and plop my stuff on the counter, but they don't wanna hear it ... and when they see what happens, they NEVER apologize for saying the nastiest stuff you can imagine ... they still look at me like I did something personal to them ... it can make a guy VERY uncomfortable!

This afternoon I am going to get stuff ready for tomorrow at Artists and Fleas. When we get there we want to open without a 2 hour setup. We really don't like setting up while shoppers are in the place, because they just pass by ... and that's a waste. I have some new pieces to go out this week again (I try to make a few every week) - a couple of Egyptian style .999 fine silver rings made with PMC and a 14k gold and ruby cabochon ring. Things are moving along well, and we expect things will go a lot more smoothly with our display.

And if I have time ... my other desktop PC is being VERY uncooperative ... I just put more memory in so it has 2GB Ram now ... I have never been able to get the on - board sound working, and so I bought a new sound card ... put it in ... Win XP says its working properly ... but still no sound. I have been building PCs since 1998, and the human always wins. Eventually. I love a challenge ...

Artists and Fleas in Brooklyn is our new Saturday home base

So, we've got two days under our belts at Artists and Fleas in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. I can already see that if we stick it out we'll build a following there. The place is a great mix of stuff; and although there are established jewelry sellers at A&F, ours is different so we fit in fine. I really thought it would be an inconvenience to get there, but it takes just over a half hour - through the Bronx and Manhattan, then over the Williamsburg Bridge - no tolls, free parking ... MUCH more convenient than I thought it would be. People in the neighborhood are very cool - and appreciate what it takes to create. We'll have to see ... but so far we like it. We'll be there Saturdays - Dec 1, 8, 15 & 22 - and plan on going out there once a week.

We've decided its time to stop banging our heads against a brick wall (not literally, of course). For several years we've chased the holy grail keyword term - "silver jewelry" - getting very close to the top of the Google search engine for that term. But we really don't want to sell the same old tired silver jewelry everyone else has, and the sites at the top all sell the same stuff out of catalogs. Our strong point is that we make handcrafted silver jewelry - true artisan pieces - that they cannot get. At this time of year, sites like ours get pushed aside by the big sites competing for the same search terms that they couldn't care less about in July. So we now have a new plan. If it works out we'll be a lot stronger in a few months ...

Terry and I are REALLY excited about this coming Sunday! We've been making jewelry for Etsy Day at Artists and Fleas in Brooklyn, and have some great stuff to bring with us. We didn't go to our last street fair due to bad weather in the morning, so its been three weeks since we sold offline. But the time wasn't wasted ... we got to work and plan to do more.

The sad state of the street fair biz ...

Well .. this Saturday is our last street fair. The last two were washouts due to weather, and it looks like this Saturday its gonna ... rain. Again. Not a happy vendor. We will NEVER pay for nearly 30 street fairs in advance again.

On a more positive note, we are going to set up at Artists and Fleas in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for four days - once each weekend - to sell our handcrafted silver jewelry and silver chains by the inch. We visited the place and were very happy to see a vibrant market with handcrafted jewelry, hand made silk-screened clothing and tees, an artist selling original prints, hand knit and crochet items like scarves, hats and gloves, a DJ selling collectible records (VINYL!) ... a great place for us to try out. We're looking forward to it!

Street fair update

I have been a busy guy ... lots of website sales lately, keeping me busy. The past few street fairs have been pretty good as far as sales go, but last week (Saturday) was not fun ... it was very windy and I spent the day picking stuff up. Our canopy was OK because we weigh it down with sand on each leg - but other a lot of other vendors were NOT prepared. The PSYCHIC should have known ... her canopy went flying! We have 3 fairs left this season. This week (Saturday) it looks like its gonna rain so we may skip it. I hate to do that but if the weather is going to be bad, no one will come out anyway. We'll have to see ...

We had the best spot EVER to set up ... right across the street from Radio City Music Hall! We have never seen so much foot traffic. As usual, people were very friendly and we had a blast!

Our neighbors on the left side were two Italian guys from Brooklyn selling Zeppoles ... basically deep fried balls of dough coated in confectioner's sugar. They were fresh, hot and FABULOUS. On the right we had a kid from Mexico selling hand knitted sweaters. That's what is so great about these fairs ... they reflect the NYC melting pot - so many different cultures here adding to the mix is awesome ... trying all the different foods is making me gain a few unwanted pounds but its so much FUN!

Sure, we sold some stuff ... but after talking to lots of other merchandise vendors I realize they aren't selling much either ... people come to these things to walk ... and EAT!

I think we'll be looking for a different venue to work outside next year. The experience is a good one though ... and it satisfies my curiosity about these fairs ... but they are not shopping destination events.

On another note ... we have set up two online venues off our site to showcase our handcrafted items. One of them is on a "mall" site, and the other is an Etsy shop. We will not be selling our regular "commercial silver jewelry" on these sites - just handcrafted or "altered" items.

Selling jewelry on the streets of New York City ...

Well, it has been a wild summer. I really wanted to keep up with this journal, but I just haven't had the time. The street fair thing has been a real experience; we have learned a lot! Terry and I have tried a lot of ways to set up, we've tried different merchandise ... its not at all like selling online.

At first we brought eight glass and aluminum showcases. We sold very little.

So we ditched the cases. We sold more, but ... it seemed people were looking for less expensive things. A lot of our jewelry is priced in the $20 - $50.00 range, with many pieces priced much higher. People loved the stuff; they just didn't want to spend that much on an impulse buy. So we bought stuff we could sell for less than $10.00, and found it sold a LOT better. Stuff like stretch bracelets, gem chip jewelry, shell necklaces etc. Lower priced silver chains and bracelets do sell; but not as well as we thought, considering that silver jewelry is currently very fashionable. New York has always been a gold and diamond town ... silver jewelry never has sold well here. But costume jewelry sells like crazy in NYC. There is no middle ground. Jewelry has to be VERY expensive - or VERY cheap.

The fairs we're doing are basically a neighborhood "pedestrian mall" type affair. We really expected big crowds, especially in Manhattan, but the people running these street fairs don't promote them very well ... so we get mostly people who live in the neighborhood just out for a walk mixed in with a few New York visitors (tourists). I have to say people are VERY friendly - and MUCH more honest than we expected! Last week a mother and daughter came in. The daughter tried on a ring ... and forgot she had it on her finger. They talked with us for a while, then moved on. A half hour later, they came back - and returned it!

So, we are finding our "niche" so to speak. And we're having a lot of fun! We get to meet lots of people from outside NY, and have become friendly with many of the "regular" vendors. So far we've been caught in the rain twice, but the weather has generally been very good. In all, a very positive experience!

A beginning ...

Hi ... I'm Bob Edwards, the guy behind www.jewelry24seven.com - and I'm looking forward to having a bit more freedom to write what I want to here ... it seems all I write on the site is product descriptions etc ... Here, I'll be geting into lots of stuff related to silver jewelry, ranging from making it to selling it on the web and at street fairs here in New York City.

The site has been online for about six years now. It is growing - in size and popularity - at a steady pace. Our silver chains by the inch have been shipped to every state from Maine to Hawaii. Our Balinese sources supply us with beautiful earrings, bracelets and barrettes. And our hand crafted silver jewelry has gotten better and better ... its hard for me to believe, but my partner Terry and I have been making silver jewelry for over 30 years now ...

Terry likes working with chain, wire and beads. She makes some really wild and cool stuff.

I am more of a metal worker. I make rings, bracelets, earrings ... and lots more. I also cut and polish cabochons to set in my jewelry ... like opal, turquoise, chrysoprase and petrified wood.

This year, we're booked into 29 Manhattan street fairs. I will be working the fairs with my partner in life and business, Terry ... and my niece Melissa. I will post a schedule soon ... the first one is on April 22, and they run through November - one each weekend. Should be fun!
